The Property

You climb to it. The town falls away behind you, and at the top of the ridge the house reveals itself · long lines of glass catching the light, the whole valley opening up beside it.

People get one thing wrong about Starwood. They call it far. It is three miles from downtown Aspen · about ten minutes door to door. What they feel isn't distance, it's height. You are six hundred feet above the valley floor, and that elevation is the point: you hold the sun long after town has fallen into shadow, you keep the quiet when the valley fills with traffic, and you own a view no house down in Aspen will ever have.

Designed by Al Beyer and built by Cyr and Company, the house wraps walls of glass in charred cedar · burned black the way the Japanese have weatherproofed wood for centuries. From the kitchen, the great room, the primary, even the garage, it is the same view: the ski mountains across the valley, the Elk Range behind them, snow or wildflowers depending on the month. You don't decorate around a view like this. You get out of its way.

Inside, light oak underfoot and a Boffi kitchen reduced to its essence · a single long island of leathered black stone, integrated Miele, a wall of glass that slides open to the terrace. A floating oak stair. Gallery-white walls built for art. Two structures, not one: a five-bedroom main house and a self-contained guest house, 7,223 square feet between them, built to the maximum the land allows.

Then the part that doesn't fit on a spec sheet. A sauna and a cold plunge set to the open peaks. A gym, two fireplaces, heated floors and driveway and patios · so the snow is simply not your problem.

542 Carroll Drive. You'll understand it when you stand on it.

The Land & The Gate

Thirty-eight acres that live like a private preserve. The land is habitat, not just acreage · elk move through the meadow at first light, deer in the aspens, fox and the occasional bear or moose passing through. You don't live beside the wilderness here. You live in it. Enzo's Trail winds through the aspens to private shooting grounds · rifle and archery, targets set into a sloping meadow. A telescope for the daytime peaks and the night sky. Birdhouses in the groves, a fire pit on the lawn. At the foot of the drive, the Shadyside Trail · the shaded half of Aspen's Sunnyside loop · so the hiking and biking begin where the driveway ends.

All of it inside the only gated community in Aspen. Starwood keeps a staffed gatehouse twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year, and its own fire station · tennis, groomed cross-country trails, commons pastures for horses, seven miles of private plowed road. Founded in 1962, it remains the address Aspen's most private buyers choose. Not despite the gate and the climb. Because of them.
